SES acquires Intelsat: An enhanced network of 120 satellites for smarter connectivity

Space Y’s member, SES, expanded its network to 120 satellites through the acquisition of Intelsat, the second largest provider of satellite communications services with principal offices in the U.S. The acquisition, announced in previous years, was confirmed last week by SES with a press release.

Based in Luxembourg, SES represents a key European player in the satellite communications sector, supplying video and data connectivity worldwide to broadcasters, content and internet service providers, mobile and fixed network operators, governments and institutions.

The newly combined company will be able to leverage on teams with strong vertical expertise and on a network of 90 geostationary (GEO) satellites, 30 medium earth orbit (MEO) satellites, in addition to an access to low earth orbit (LEO) constellations and an extensive ground network. These expanded capabilities will allow SES to deliver connectivity through complementary spectrum bands, and to provide tailored connectivity services to governments, media and businesses around the world.

With this acquisition, SES positions itself as a European and global champion in connectivity solutions that will enable the company to grow its share in traditional market segments, like maritime, aviation and media, and to explore emerging markets, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), direct-to-device communications, inter-satellite data relay, space situational awareness, and quantum key distribution.
