Making Earth Observation systems equitable and accessible
21 October 2025, 14:00 – 15:30 (CET), Online
Earth Observation and space technologies are transforming how we respond to climate change, disasters and food insecurity, driving progress toward sustainable development. However, these innovations are not yet benefitting everyone equally. Women, Indigenous people and other communities often face barriers to access such innovations, limiting their ability to shape or benefit from EO and space technologies advancements.
The D4D Hub of the Global Gateway organises a webinar series on Gender & Digital Rights. The next session will be dedicated to exploring how EO and space technologies can be designed and governed as equitable digital public goods fostering gender equality, inclusivity, diversity, and empowerment.
Space Y’s permanent representative will share her experience as a member of the core team of Women in Copernicus. She will talk about the initiative’s findings, and provide insights into the challenges and facilitators reported by women pursuing a career in the EO sector.
Key topics addressed within the webinar will include :
- The barriers that limit women’s and marginalised groups’ participation in EO & Space technologies, from education and entrepreneurship to local use.
- How inclusive design and participatory governance can bridge the gap between platforms and local communities.
- Practical approaches for equitable access: open data, capacity building and representation.
- Good practices and case studies showing how inclusive EO & Space technologies strengthen innovation, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
